| 2005 Breeder of Excellence Recipient - Longman Family |
 With few exceptions, this year's nominees for the INBA Breeder of Excellence Award have had one of the greatest and most far-reaching impacts on the Nubian breed in the United States in the last thirty-five years. This goat breeding family partnership was a unanimous choice of INBA's 2005 Breeder of Excellence Award Committee. Sharing well over 100 years of goat raising experience between them, they have produced numerous permanent champions, star milkers, and animals who have appraised excellent. Additionally, their herdname can be found in the background of thirty-one National Champions and Reserve Champions from 1982 to date. For these reasons, the INBA Breeder of Excellence Award Committee offers as their 2005 award nominees Betty, Jack and Sherry Longman of Longman's Nubians.Mom Betty was introduced to her first Nubians around the age of four when she began living with her grandparents. Although her goatkeeping was put on temporary hold for several years after she and Jack married (they celebrated 58 years of matrimony in August 2005!), by 1968 the family had returned to the country and daughter Sherry decided she wanted to begin raising Nubian dairy goats as her FFA project. In true family fashion, everyone plays a part - Betty overlooks the operation, disbudding, tattooing, vaccinating and handling all non-vet emergencies; additionally she handles sales and shipping of animals; Sherry works directly with the goats, milking, trimming feet, showing and helping her mom deliver and feed babies; Jack drives Sherry and her goats to shows, and lends a helping hand wherever he is needed. In 1970 Longman's had their first Permanent Champion, a buck named Longman's Barnaby Buck. Three of Barnaby's yearling milking daughters made their milking stars that year as well. At the 1973 National Show, Barnaby was the Premier Sire, and at the 1976 National Show Longman's was named Premier Nubian Exhibitor. Throughout the years, the Longman's herdname has been synonymous with strong dam lines, excellent milk production and beautiful udders. From 1973 to 1988 when the herd was on Standard DHIR testing, does that had either been bred or owned by Sherry had 62 Top Ten placings in milk and butterfat.
