INBA Breeder of Excellence Award - Virginia Baker |
At
the 2003 ADGA Convention in Nashville, TN, the International
Nubian Breeders Association (INBA) unanimously voted to award
Virginia Baker of Copper Hill Nubians, the Breeder of Excellence
Award. The Breeder of Excellence Committee established the
guidelines and provided information to support their choice
for this award.
The attached information was presented to the INBA for
their perusal.

The INBA Breeder of Excellence award should be given
to a living breeder who has made a significant contribution
to the Nubian breed as a whole. The Award is an acknowledgment
of a superior breeding program in a herd whose genetic
dominance has been duplicated consistently in many herds
over many generations. These animals have been proven through
the participation in the various programs such as Linear
Appraisal, DHIR testing (milk production), and National,
State, and local show awards. The INBA Breeder of Excellence
award is given in gratitude to the dedicated Nubian breeder
who continually offers the very best in the Nubian breed.
The above has been the criteria in this committee's search for
the recipient of the 2003 Breeder of Excellence.
There are many herds that either had the show wins, milk production,
and/or linear appraisal scores for consideration, but to have placed
high in all three categories quickly narrowed the playing field.
This year's award submission has been an ADGA member since June
of 1982. She has been involved with purebred animals most of her
adult life; she and her husband, Everett Lee, having developed
a large herd of purebred Guernsey cows before purchasing her first
two purebred Nubian does in 1980.
Knowing the importance of working with purebred genetics in creating
a productive, structurally sound, and eye pleasing animal, she
attended the ADGA National Shows religiously, surprising herself
by repeatedly selecting winners from the grandstand. She found
her preference almost always included those with Hallcienda backgrounds.
Those genetics are the basis of today's COPPER HILL NUBIANS, owned
by Virginia Baker.
Copper Hill does have been in the Top Ten Awards yearly since 1992,
either with butterfat, protein and/or milk production. Many of
those "hard working girls" have GCH before their names or Linear
Appraisal scores in the Excellent (90 +) area. Copper Hill bucks
are holding up their end. such as ++*B GCH Copper Hill Alginon's
Breakaway, LA EX: 93. Breakaway was the National Premier Nubian
Sire at the 2000 and 2001 ADGA National Shows. We are impressed
with lines of Nubians that are correct and show well but also have
high production behind them. He has produced Top Ten and GCH daughters.
Breakaway's daughter, GCH Manges Colony Breakaway's Beauty is the
2000 ADGA National Champion. Another Breakaway daughter, CH Copper
Hill A Lady in Red, holds the 2000 Reserve National Champion award.

Often times it is difficult for Copper Hill Nubians to attend distant
shows and at best only two shows each season are made. Virginia
has used the ADGA Linear Appraisal program in place of showing
to validate her breeding program. However, Copper Hill animals
in other herds have been more than competitive in the show ring
and become champions in their own right. (See attachments.) Case
in point: GCH +*B Copper Hill Milk Man, owned by the Noah Goddard
family. Noah believes that the genetic strengths of Milk Man have
been successfully transmitted to his granddaughters. For example:
GCH Goddard Farm Teresa 5*M has been Grand or Reserve 15 times
in shows in four states under ten different judges. Milk Man has
sired several champion bucks including Teresa's sire, GCH +B Goddard
Farm Hercules.
When asked what animals have made the greatest impact on her herd,
Virginia responded quickly with the following bucks, " ++*B Amberwood
Jack Frost North Wind and ++*B Amberwood Jedi's Winter Frost (LA
EX: 91)". Long since deceased, they continue to provide the structural
correctness, breed character, and the high milk production so important
in the Copper Hill herd today. Copper Hill's philosophy is to breed
not just for show, or high Linear Appraisal scores, or high milk
production, but for ONE animal that HAS IT ALL; those qualities
that represents the best of the whole animal.
The Breeder of Excellence committee unanimously chose Virginia
Baker of Copper Hill Nubians as the recipient of this years Breeder
of Excellence award. We feel that she strives to breed an animal
that represents the Nubian as a whole; structurally correct, with
good breed character, and animals that milk.
